Quality Integrity and Reliability
What is IPN?
Intraperitoneal Nutrition, IPN, is a non-invasive nutrition support therapy provided for patients on peritoneal dialysis. IPN contains the amino acids needed for supplemental nutrition support and is recommended for patients who are unable to meet nutrient needs through oral diet and traditional means of protein repletion. IPN provides the protein needed to improve health and well being.
What is the purpose of IPN?
IPN is intended to provide peritoneal dialysis patients with supplemental nutrition support and is recommended for patients who are unable to meet nutrient needs through oral diet and traditional means of protein repletion. While the effects on each patient are different, some patients may experience an improvement in dry body weight and energy levels. Others are able to increase whole body protein, are better able to fight off infection and can improve strength and appetite.
How is IPN administered?
IPN is administered in the same method as your peritoneal dialysis (PD) exchanges, so no additional access site is required.
Will I have to increase the number of my peritoneal dialysis exchanges to receive IPN?
No. IPN will be used in place of one or two of your daily PD exchanges.
Does IPN contain a large amount of potassium or phosphorous?
No, there is no potassium or phosphorous in IPN. The bag contains a solution of amino acids (protein) and dextrose that is added to your PD regimen.
What is the difference between the usual exchange / solution compared to the IPN exchange / solution?
IPN mimics your usual exchange/solution that your physician and nurse have ordered. The only difference is that amino acids (protein) are added in accordance with your physician's order.
Are there any side effects to IPN?
Some of the most common side effects include nausea, sense of fullness and flushing. However, these are usually minimal and can be minimized with further order customization. Our dedicated pharmacists are available for consultation.
How long is IPN administered?
The length of IPN therapy varies from person to person and is dependent on an individual patient's goals and the degree of malnutrition. The physician and dialysis unit staff will determine when these goals have been achieved.
Do fluids have to be restricted?
No, IPN does not affect daily fluid restriction.
Are CCPD patients able to receive IPN?
Yes. Most cyclers can be programmed to recognize IPN therapy. IPN is usually administered during the last exchange, for the longest dwell.
Important! Patients need to discuss the risks and benefits of this therapy with their doctor, nurse and renal dietitian. If you or your patients have additional questions regarding IPN, please contact DCRX Infusion to speak with a member of our clinical support team at 866.348.0441.
